Matchday: Lens-Bordeaux (Stade Chaban-Delmas)
By: Xavier | August 8th, 2009
On the eve of Lens’ season opener against champions Bordeaux, coach Jean-Guy Wallemme has selected his nineteen players and is set to do battle once again in the perilous trenches of Ligue 1. Three players fresh from La Gaillette training center will make their maiden voyage in the top flight: Samuel Atrous, Steven Joseph-Monrose and Samba Sow.
Geoffrey Doumeng (ankle) is out injured. Young defender William Remy has been left available for the CFA. Kanga Akalé, Aruna Dindane, Sidi Keita, Sébastien Roudet, Romain Sartre, Dalibor Veselinovic and Grégory Vignal are all on the transfer list and were excluded by coach Wallemme. Many Lens fans are upset at their Star player Dindane being left out against such a formidable foe.
As for the champions they are poised to set a Ligue 1 record if they launch the defense of their title with a victory. Les Girondins won their final 11 matches at the end of last season on their way to a sixth French title.
Only Lille, in 1949, have won as many games in succession in France’s top flight although that was spread out over two seasons.
A 12th consecutive triumph tomorrow would establish a new record, and would provide Laurent Blanc’s side with the perfect start to the campaign.
Former Lens stalwart and France international Alou Diarra will be on hand and he will no doubt be a formidable presence for the southern club all season long. After much speculation about an imminent transfer to Arsenal, Moroccan international striker Marouane Chamakh remains at Bordeaux and will be available.
Le Groupe Lensois: Atrous, Kasraoui, Runje; Chelle, El Adoua, Hermach, Laurenti, Ramos, Yahia; Demont, Jemaa, Kovacevic, Milovanovic, Sow; Boukari, Eduardo, Joseph-Monrose, Maoulida, Monnet-Paquet.
Les Girondins: Carrasso, Ramé; Chalmé, Ciani, Henrique, Jurietti, Placente, Planus, Trémoulinas; Diarra, Fernando, Gourcuff, Plasil, Wendel; Bellion, Cavenaghi, Chamakh, Gouffran, Jussiê.

Goal to Lens! Nice! I’ve been impressed with their performance.

No doubt Thomas. After a slow start they regrouped and have a good chance to take three points in the second half. We shall see….

well it looks like the refs want to preserve a victory for Bordeaux at home as they have just taken away a clear goal by Boukari. Terrible…

Its going to be a long season to say the least. Hopefully, they won’t get relegated again. I’m out.

It was a good performance by Lens though. This was the defending champions for gods sake, and they only lost by 2 goals, had the refs made the right decision. RCL will be staying up.

No doubt. I give them credit. And it was one of the most poorly officiated games I have seen in a long time. They actually could have won if the goal would have been credited and they would have given the penalty in the box when Jemaa was tackled. Nevertheless, It will be crucial to bounce back with three points next week against Auxerre.

A good game for Lens, I don’t doubt that they’ll stay in Ligue 1 if they continue playing like this. Hadn’t the referee disallowed the second goal and had the result been 2:2, I doubt that Bordeaux would’ve scored those two goals that they scored in the end. All in all, a good game from the Sang et Or by my opinion.

I agree with Nikola, If the goal hadn’t been dissalowed, the game would have stood at 2-2.

Shame they drew Bordeaux away right-out-of-the-gate on matchday 1; alot to ask of them, but they held their own. They should take-down Auxerre down easily playing like this at SF-B.

Johnny,
It depends though. They actually could have beaten or at least tied Bordeaux if not for the refs’ incompetence. However, this is the problem with these young teams. They lack mental toughness and consistency. They may bounce back and beat Auxerre as they certainly should. But they could also flop and screw it all up. Its always a toss up. Another thing, I don’t understand having Aruna Dindane, Kanga Akale and Sidi Keita playing with the reserves? I know Lens is dead broke after relegation and need the money from these players but if you can’t unload them, play them!

What? Those three playing in the CFA? And with Hullcity, Stoke and Blackburn all looking into Aruna, why aren’t they showcasing him in the league? And if you’re looking into cashing-in on the those pieces, they should be playing with the pros.
Vignal just went to Birmingham C.Posted from

Hahaha. Its called Martel logic! Thats why this massive club got relegated in the first place! Only idiots like these could screw something like this up. Honestly I don’t see them recovering well from that relegation crap. They have been almost bankrupted by it. I think the only hope is some rich Khaliji comes in takes over the club, expands the stadium and allows for the public stoning of Martel.
