Maoulida signs. Now What?

By: Jay | January 2nd, 2008

Well, when it comes to recruitment it doesn’t hurt to be a world famous French footballing hero. Apparently this was one of the reasons why Toifilou Maoulida signed on with Lens on the first day of the new year.

Maoulida grew up admiring current Lens head man Jean-Pierre Papin. Indeed, the veteran Ligue 1 striker stated as much on the club’s official site.

“it is true that the chance to work with Papin, who I watched as a child, counted.”

And so, the Lensois have beaten out Saint Etienne for the striker’s services and he will look to fill in for the loss of top Lensois Aruna Dindane who is headed to the African Cup of Nations along with Kanga Akale and Adama Coulibaly.

The contract was said to have been for three years and six months. And the rate is said to be anywhere between two and three million pounds.

It must be said that Maoulida has struggled to be effective in the last two seasons with both Marseille and Auxerre. Moreover, I think that Fabrice Pancrate would have been a better choice here because of his effectiveness in the air and his versatility in general.

Nevertheless, the blood and gold could have fared far worse judging from some of the names being mentioned in the press as possible signings.

Hopefully, president Gervais Martel and the management at La Gaillette will move on with more exciting names such as Younis Mahmoud and Eric Mouloungui.
